All international students who plan to study at Ghent University Global Campus (Korea) are required to obtain a South Korea D-2 (Student) visa prior to arrival. Ghent University Global Campus provides students with the necessary documents to support the visa application, including:

• Certificate of Admission
• A copy of the Institutional Registration Number Certificate

Students must submit their visa application directly to the Korean Embassy or Consulate in their home country. The following items are commonly required:

• Passport
• Passport photo
• Original academic credentials (e.g., diploma, transcript)
• Proof of financial resources (funds covering at least one year of tuition and living expenses)
• Visa application fee

If the financial document is under a parent’s name, an official document proving the family relationship must also be submitted.
The final list of required documents is determined by each embassy. All documents must be verified and accepted by the embassy before the visa is issued.

When applying for your first Alien Registration Card (ARC), GUGC International Manager will help you by checking the immigration office’s reservation system and letting you know the earliest available appointment. Typically, it takes about two or three months for your ARC to be issued, and it will be delivered to your residence.

If any of the following information changes after you have been issued an Alien Registration Card (ARC), it is necessary to report the change to the Immigration office:

When it comes to reporting changes in your information, you have two options:

If you are registered as a student (trainee) at GUGC, you are also covered by the existing “Upgraded Comprehensive University Insurance” contracted by the university.
This insurance mainly covers: Accidents occurring during educational or research activities on campus, and accidents related to the use of university facilities.

The main coverage limits per accident are as follows:
School Facilities Liability (bodily injury and property damage): up to 100,000,000 KRW per accident Medical treatment costs for injuries sustained during on-campus activities: up to 3,000,000 KRW per accident

In addition, a deductible of 100,000 KRW applies per accident for medical treatment claims.
According to the current information from the insurer, there is no separate additional liability limit specifically for cases where a student personally causes injury to another person, beyond the facility-related liability described above.

After you arrive in Korea and receive your Alien Registration Card (ARC), you will be automatically enrolled in the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). This is a mandatory public insurance for all long-term D-2 (Student) visa holders. Under NHIS, most general medical costs – including hospital visits, hospitalization, and surgery – are covered according to the national insurance rules. It is important to understand that in Korea, medical costs are divided into two categories:

• Covered services (급여, “benefit” items):

  NHIS pays part of the cost, and you pay the remaining patient share (본인부담금).
  Common examples: General doctor consultations, Standard blood tests
• Non-covered services (비급여, “non-benefit” items):

  These are not supported by NHIS, and you must pay the total amount.
  Common examples: MRI scans, Certain vaccinations

The monthly insurance bill will be sent to your dormitory room (or other registered address). The monthly insurance contribution you are required to pay is approximately 76,390 KRW (as of 2026). NHIS will be your main insurance for general illnesses and injuries during your stay in Korea.
